The problems we face really got to me and forced me to see art for what it is -- an experience in a visual language.
I stopped giving names and switched to single letters.
Q -- 2023
WE TAKE OUR LAST BREATH IN THE GARDEN OF NATURAL SURFACES -- 2019
My most recent work, about the desecration of human life.
LIFE PERSISTS IN A TIME OF DARKNESS -- 2018
Flat work on paper mostly 14" X 17" or 16" X 20". I began these drawings by copying stained glass window designs that I made in sketchbooks in cathedrals while traveling, and which then sprang to life with embryonic creatures and life forms from the unknown. My vision is that life is simply everywhere and cannot be kept back by our foolish efforts to acquire and control it.
NICHOS, SHRINES & DOORS -- 2015 - 2017
My exploration into carpentry. I have always loved shrines and nichos, both the Catholic religious versions and the Mexican nichos with everyday objects mixed with religious objects.
RATS SPEAK -- 2015
After experiencing 2 extreme rat infestations I began to study rats and then quickly realized how much they have in common with humans, both good and bad traits. We love them as pets; we torture them with experiments; we create endless stories about them, both charming and frightening, so I depicted human situations using rats. After making this work the rats began to speak showing both stupidity and intelligence, again like humans.
VERMIN -- 2013 - 2014
Vermin:
1. Noxious, objectionable, or disgusting animals collectively, esp. those of small size that appear commonly and are difficult to control
2. An objectionable or obnoxious person or such persons collectively
--Webster's Dictionary
The rats are made from Paperclay which is made out of paper pulp and volcanic ash. They are sealed and painted with multiple coats of acrylic, oils, and wax.
SPONTANEOUS GENERATION -- 2011
I pinned my hopes on thinking that our species may be irrelevant because new life would arise from matter spontaneously. But we have not left matter itself in the state in which we found it -- that is not our nature. But life may rise anew; although perhaps as a slime mold rather than Mozart.
The work in this series from c. 2011 is based on a story I wrote about the accidental creation in a laboratory in Westchester, NY of a new species of creature called Minicephalus Glaber Sapiens. I created a history of its creation with museum display cases and tunnel displays based on the naked mole rats which lived for many years in The World of Darkness at the Bronx Zoo in NYC.
MATTER, MATERIALS & LIGHTS -- 2009
In this series from c. 2009 I explored the material nature of the world along with various ways of using art materials. I made molds of heads I had formed from Paperclay, the bones of a cow skeleton which I had found in the woods, hubcaps and rocks. I began to use LED lights embedded in my work and handmade paper, metal leaf and other materials.
STORIES FROM OUR FORBEARS -- 2006
This work was done c. 2006 and it is entirely about the destruction of this planet and global warming. I used the idea of Adam and Eve tasting the fruit of decadence and images of the trappings of greed and destruction. Some people had no idea of what my work was about.
PORTRAITS -- 2000 - 2011
Many of these portraits are of myself because it is convenient to use a model who is ready and willing exactly when I am. Also, and importantly, I did not use portrait faces in my art very often because of considerations of power and money. I found that other people were able to sit very still and be examined if I was paying them or if they were paying me. If no money exchanged hands the dynamic was different. Also, I don't have the comfortable feeling of power that is needed to "use" the faces of others to express oneself. That is a topic which begs to be closely examined.
